Hello Void (non-wedding stuff)

2 min read

Today will be another stream-of-conciousness newsletter: I am still pretty engrossed in wedding stuff but have nothing I want to show (yet). However, I'm also getting back in to non-wedding things (what? I have a life and personality outside of my wedding?).

Drawing

Firstly, I picked up my sketchbook again. I'd been doing portraits for the wedding and haven't drawn or painted anything else recently. But now in my work lunchbreaks I'm back to doodling.

These first two pages I started ages ago. I quite like how it looked with the negative space, but at the same time I couldn't handle that negative space so I've been slowly filling in the gaps. It's a good way to get back into it without having to think too much.

I have another little sketchbook I should check too. It was my 'office sketchbook' but I've been working from home for quite a while now, so having an office vs home sketchbook doesn't make much sense anymore.

Movies

Secondly, I'm watching movies again. My brain wasn't up to concentrating on movies or thinking about what to watch, so all I'd been doing was catching up on Drag Race and Project Runway. But I'm up to date on those now!

I recently watched The Ritual (2017) which I quite liked but I think the ending fizzled a bit*.

As I write this, I've been watching The Taking of Deborah Logan, which I'm also enjoying. I don't think it's very scary* but I like the idea of a possession movie with an older victim and it appearing as Dementia.

*As always, the disclaimer that I'm watching movies while doing other things and sometimes in pieces. Sometimes my opinion totally changes when watching a second time and/or watching without distractions. Also, with The Taking of Deborah Logan, at the time of writing this I still have about 20mins left to watch!

Reading

I'm currently reading The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank. I've never read it before and have been surprised at how easy it is to read, how likeable Anne is, but mostly how positive and reasonable she is a lot of the time. It's weirdly uplifting, until you read a single line or two that breaks your heart because you have context that Anne doesn't have.

Next newsletter

Next one is due November 13 but that is scarily close to the wedding, so we will see if I decide to post one then or not. After that, the next one will be December 13 and hopefully I'll be able to share some wedding stuff, if I have time post-honeymoon and pre-Xmas!

After that, it will be 2027, and I will be actively getting back into the habit of creating non-wedding related stuff. Let me know what you want to see in the 2027 newsletters and/or in my art - it's the perfect time, since I'll be starting fresh!

Oh, and why did I call this Hello Void? Because I do feel like I'm rambling into the void when I write these newsletters. It's hard trying to gain a following online, especially when my head hasn't been in it. But, I'll still be around, if you do want to comment!

I read Anne Frank's diary when I was the same age as she was when she wrote it. It disturbed me in so many ways, but it really made an impact and it was really well written - especially for a diary. But at the time I didn't actually like her as a person, although I can't remember why. It would be interesting to read it again now, when I would (I hope!) be more sympathetic to the working mind of a teenager!

I wouldn't describe my experience as disturbing - yet. I'm over halfway through but I imagine nearer the end will hit more...

But yes it is surprisingly well written, I keep forgetting how young she is! But I don't find her annoying at all, but it would be very different at the same age as her.
